Vastu Shastra

Vastu organises a building by direction, so that light, air and movement work with the site rather than against it. The directional rules below are the classical core.

The eight directions

Each direction has a ruling deity and a graha, and each suits a particular use.

North-east (Ishanya)
Jupiter. Prayer room, water source. Keep it light, open and uncluttered.
East (Purva)
Sun. Main entrance and living areas; the morning light belongs here.
South-east (Agneya)
Venus, ruled by Agni. The kitchen, and any electrical load.
South (Dakshin)
Mars. Bedrooms and heavy storage; avoid main entrances here where possible.
South-west (Nairutya)
Rahu. The heaviest part of the house — the master bedroom and the strongest walls.
West (Paschim)
Saturn. Dining, study and children’s rooms.
North-west (Vayavya)
Moon, ruled by Vayu. Guest rooms, garage, anything transient.
North (Uttar)
Mercury, the direction of Kubera. Cash, treasury, office; keep it open.

Practical corrections

Most homes cannot be rebuilt. These adjustments do most of the work.

Weight balance
Keep the south and west heavier than the north and east — furniture, cupboards, storage.
Sleep direction
Head to the south or east while sleeping; avoid the head to the north.
Brahmasthan
The centre of the plan stays open — no staircase, toilet or heavy pillar there.
Clutter and water
Fix leaking taps and clear the north-east first; these two changes are reported to help most.
